OVERALL CONCLUSION
To conclude, the Three Gorges Dam was successfully able to improve China’s economy, this was at the cost of China’s society and environment, as government policies to protect the latter were unsuccessful. This was because while the Chinese Government did make the effort to pass laws and policies in relation to China’s environment and society, they were not properly implemented due to lack of proper foresight, effort, concern, and corruption.
From an economic standpoint, China’s economy directly benefited from the Three Gorges Dam, as the dam helped boost trade, due to improved navigability that resulted from a reduction in transport costs. Moreover, revenue from tourism also increased, and costs to generate power and flood control decreased. However, due to the large scale of the dam’s construction, over one million people were forced to resettle, and were left without proper compensation, due to the fact that aforementioned policies were not acted upon. Similarly, the environment also faced negative consequences, as the presence of the dam directly damaged ecosystems within the Three Gorges Reservoir Region; it altered and damaged its geography, leading to reduced biodiversity, as well as other effects that are further developing and may spread out to all of China.
Therefore, like other industrialised nations that have preceded it, economic progress through mass initiatives like the Three Gorges Dam were successfully able to boost China’s economy. However, similar to other industrialised nations, this was done at the cost of China’s society and environment, as the government was largely driven by profit and economic benefits.
